About the Program
What’s the Purpose of Leadership LS?
Leadership Lee’s Summit (LLS) is designed to assist in developing the future leaders of the area. Since its inception in 1991, the program has empowered more than 500 participants to become influential community leaders.
How Are Candidates are Chosen?
A maximum of 30 participants are chosen each year.
This is based on strict criteria including:
- personal motivation,
- an interest in serving Lee’s Summit,
- potential or existing opportunities for advancement to top leadership positions,
- willingness to commit time and energy to complete the program, and full support of the organization being represented.
How Long Does the Program Last?
LLS is an intensive nine-month program beginning with a welcome reception in August and ending with graduation in May.
How is the Program Organized?
Participants are divided into small groups, with each group responsible for planning and executing one class day.
Groups are provided a topic and must develop an agenda, arrange for speakers, organize meals and plan any necessary transportation for the day.
Topics include local history, education, government, recreation and leisure, health and wellness, and business and industry.
Requirements
What is Required to Complete the Program?
- Attendance at each session (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.) and attendance of at least one Chamber event outside of class
- Eight hours of community service in Lee’s Summit, to be completed outside of class
- Participation in class community service project, to be completed outside of class
- Group meetings outside of class
- Must be 21 years of age or older
Attendance Requirements
Participants are allowed one excused absence of eight hours; two additional community service hours are required for each hour missed after that excused eight hours in order to graduate.
Attendance at the first session in September is mandatory and may not be counted as an excused absence.
Missing a total of 16 hours or more of class time results in removal from the program.

Goals of the Program
Enhance the leadership skills of participants to improve Lee’s Summit’s future
Familiarize participants with the community’s unique opportunities, needs, problems and resources
Establish effective peer relationships between participants and community leaders
Educate participants on how to move people and ideas to action
Registration
Tuition to attend the program is $900 for Chamber
members; $1,000 for non-members.
Registration fee covers materials and workshops.
Tuition is payable by the individual, employer or sponsoring organization and must be paid in full prior to the first class in September.
